For McLean, the song strikes a deeply personal chord. \u201cAs I head into the middle of grade 11 and continue to learn more about myself, I\u2019ve been feeling that drive\u2014that will leave a mark. This song is my way of channeling that feeling,\u201d he shares.<\/p>\n

\u2018Right Now\u2019<\/em><\/strong> represents a distinct evolution in McLean\u2019s artistry. As part of his upcoming mixtape, \u2018The Times: InI Mixtape\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, the track combines the vibrant energy of Toronto with a timeless reggae sound. \u201cThere are two main goals I had for this mixtape,\u201d he explains. \u201cFirst, I wanted to give people the new music they\u2019ve been asking for\u2014something they can enjoy on classic riddims while showcasing my musical range. Second, I wanted to teach my peers and the youth in Toronto about reggae music and its history, using examples they might already recognize and connect with.\u201d<\/p>\n

McLean sees \u2018Right Now\u2019<\/em><\/strong> as embodying the spirit of his city: \u201cIt represents the swag, the hype, and the attitude of the youth\u2014while also encouraging them to reflect on their actions and plan for something better.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a significant milestone for McLean, \u2018Right Now\u2019<\/em><\/strong> marks his first foray into self-recording. \u201cThis single is a big milestone for me\u2014it\u2019s the first time I recorded myself, and it\u2019s pushed me to grow creatively in ways I didn\u2019t expect,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

McLean\u2019s dedication to authenticity shines through in every aspect of the track. He penned his own lyrics, handled backup vocals, and collaborated with Pablo of Soul Survival Studio for the final mix.<\/p>\n

The broader project, \u2018The Times: InI Mixtape\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, delves deep into both personal and cultural narratives. \u201cThe mixtape reflects these pivotal moments in Canadian\u2014and more specifically, Torontonian\u2014history, as well as my own formative years,\u201d McLean says. \u201cMidway through high school, that feeling of becoming, of growing into myself, all culminated in the creation of this project.\u201d<\/p>\n

While McLean\u2019s message remains rooted in peace, love, and righteousness, \u2018Right Now\u2019<\/em><\/strong> takes a slightly edgier approach. \u201cThe sound on this track is more rugged, aiming to evoke the essence of the old-school reggae sound while blending it with a modern twist,\u201d he says. It\u2019s a reflection of McLean\u2019s desire to honor reggae\u2019s rich history while making it accessible to a new generation of listeners.<\/p>\n
