The singer\/musician was guest of honor for \u2018Leroy Sibbles: King of The Reggae Bassline\u2019, held on August 31 at Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre in Kingston.<\/p>\n<p>The event marked the 75-year-old Sibbles\u2019 60th anniversary in the music business and his achievements as a bass guitarist.<\/p>\n<p>Best known for a hit-laden career with harmony trio The Heptones, Sibbles hit the stage at 11:30 pm. He was introduced by his grand-daughter, Empress Adara, who flew in from Toronto with her mother Camisha and aunt Natalie. She performed Donny Hathaway\u2019s \u2018A Song for You\u2019 in tribute to her grandfather, who called Canada home for many years.<\/p>\n<p>The fans sang along to the hits that made him and The Heptones world-famous, including <strong><em>\u2018Party Time\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>\u2018Baby\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>\u2018Why Did You Leave\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>\u2018Pretty Looks Isn&#8217;t All\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>\u2018Why Must I Live\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, \u2018<strong><em>Heptones Gonna Fight\u2019 <\/em><\/strong>and <strong><em>\u2018Sweet Talking\u2019<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Sibbles then showed his prowess on the bass guitar, recalling many of the classic \u2018riddims\u2019 he played at Studio One, where he made his name with The Heptones. They included \u2018<strong><em>Satta Massa Gana\u2019<\/em><\/strong> by The Abyssinians, <strong><em>\u2018Mean Girl\u2019<\/em><\/strong> (which drove hits such as Luciano\u2019s <strong><em>\u2018Sweep Over my Soul\u2019<\/em><\/strong> and Capleton\u2019s <strong><em>\u2018Stand Tall\u2019<\/em><\/strong>); John Holt\u2019s \u2018<strong><em>A Love I Can Feel\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, the backdrop for Beres Hammond\u2019s \u2018<strong><em>Tempted to Touch\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, and Tony Rebel\u2019s <strong><em>\u2018Fresh Vegetable\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, and\u00a0 the immortal <strong><em>\u2018Full Up\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, which made songs like <strong><em>\u2018Pass The Kutchie\u2019<\/em><\/strong> by The Mighty Diamonds, and <strong><em>\u2018Political Fiction\u2019<\/em><\/strong> by Half Pint big hits.<\/p>\n<p>As he played, Sibbles and singer Andrew Cassanova gave fans a history lesson on how each riddim impacted contemporary music.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy greatest achievement, definitely, is my bass creative accompaniments, because it is the connection between singers and deejays\u2019 careers,\u201d said Sibbles.<\/p>\n<p>Saxophonist Dean Fraser, singers Duane Stephenson, Etana, Singing Melody and percussionist Bongo Herman also performed on \u2018King of The Reggae Bassline\u2019. During their sets, they hailed Sibbles\u2019 trailblazing accomplishments.<\/p>\n<p>Leroy Sibbles is a Juno Award winner.
