Wayne Wonder\u2019s\u00a0\u2018No Letting Go\u2019<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 the 2002 hit produced by\u00a0Steven \u2018Lenky\u2019 Marsden<\/a>\u00a0on the\u00a0Diwali\u00a0<\/em>riddim<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 surpassed 100 million streams on Spotify today, (October 9). It\u2019s his first song to hit the milestone.<\/p>\n

The story of\u00a0\u2018No Letting Go\u2019<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>speaks to Wonder\u2019s pioneering spirit and talents as an artist. When his peers had initially rejected\u00a0\u00a0the now iconic\u00a0Diwali<\/em>\u00a0riddim, he recognized the unique opportunity at hand and delivered a tune that showcased his impressive vocals, reflected his feelings for his partner, and simultaneously set the Dancehall ablaze.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe song was just coming from a personal life experience,\u201d the 51-year-old told\u00a0DancehallMag<\/strong>\u00a0in an\u00a0interveiw<\/a>\u00a0last year. \u201cComing from a special place and special person in my life, so in writing the lyrics, I just switched into that mode.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wrote the song in New York and told Lenky that I wanted the song to have chord and bridge and when he put it together and we heard it, we knew it was something special.\u201d<\/p>\n

Further shedding light on the song\u2019s creation, Wayne explained that its genesis is rooted in a challenge issued by his then-girlfriend, now wife, Jackie. She wanted the singer to do a song about her \u2013 not about his typical escapades with other women. It was \u2018Challenge accepted!\u2019 for Wonder, who retired to the basement of his Queens, New York home, and got to work.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was like magic. It just came out \u2013 \u201cGot somebody\u2026<\/em>\u201d \u2013 cause everything \u2018bout, I know \u2013 \u201cShe is a beauty, very special\u2019\u2026<\/em>\u00a0\u2018you right by my side\u2026 night and day\u2026\u201d\u00a0<\/em>And in the verse where we say like Keisha and Aneisha, those are real stories,\u201d Wonder, whose real name is Von Wayne Charles, revealed.<\/p>\n

\u2018No Letting Go\u2019<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0ultimately spent eight weeks on the UK Singles Chart, peaking at No. 3, and enjoyed a 31-week run on the US Billboard Hot 100, where it reached No. 11. The song also achieved Top 40 status in multiple countries, including Belgium, Canada, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, and Germany.<\/p>\n

It has received gold certifications in both the United States (2022) and the United Kingdom (2020), signifying sales and streaming of 500,000 and 400,000 units, respectively. \u201cIt\u2019s a great feeling,\u201d Wonder told\u00a0DancehallMag<\/strong>\u00a0when the song was certified Gold in the US last year. \u201cI always try to do music from a good place. I don\u2019t think about the success to follow, but every artist\u2019s dream is to get stuff like this to show that their hard work has paid off.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2003, the track served as the lead single for Wonder\u2019s 11th studio album,\u00a0\u2018No Holding Back\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, released under VP Records.<\/p>\n

The album, which\u00a0earned Wayne his only Grammy Award nomination for\u00a0Best Reggae Album<\/em>\u00a0in 2004, included songs such as\u00a0\u2018Bounce Along\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, \u2018Friend Like Me\u2019<\/strong>, \u2018Glad You Came My Way\u2019<\/strong>, \u2018Perfect Proposal\u2019<\/strong>, <\/em>\u2018Enemies<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0with Supriz\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, and\u00a0\u2018<\/em>Saddest Day\u2019<\/em><\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

In addition to Lenky, other producers who contributed to the album were Tony \u201cCD\u201d Kelly, Craig \u201cLeftside\u201d Parks, Mathew \u201cEsco\u201d Thompson, and Donovan Germain.<\/p>\n

\u2018No Holding Back\u2019<\/em><\/strong> peaked at No. 29 on the Billboard 200 and No. 40 on the UK Albums chart. It quickly earned a silver certification in the UK in 2003, after it surpassed 60,000 units sold in the country.\u00a0 As of March 2023, the album had sold and streamed the equivalent of 471,000 units in the US, Billboard\u2019s sales tracker Luminate told DancehallMag.
