Damian<\/span> \u201cJr Gong\u201d Marley\u2019s cover of George Harrison\u2019s <\/span><\/strong>\u2018My Sweet Lord\u2019 <\/span><\/i><\/strong>has taken over the #1 spot on the New York Reggae chart.<\/span><\/strong> <\/b>Produced by Marley, the song was released in August via Ghetto Youths International.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018My Sweet Lord\u2019<\/span><\/b><\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>was originally given to singer Billy Preston to record. His version was co-produced by Harrison, and it appeared on Preston’s album\u00a0\u2018Encouraging Words\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/b>,\u00a0<\/span><\/em>which was released in September 1970.<\/span><\/p>\n

In late 1970, Harrison’s version was recorded and included on his album\u00a0\u2018All Things Must Pass\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/b>. It became the biggest-selling single of 1971 in the United Kingdom, where it logged several weeks at #1. It also topped charts in 14 other countries including the US.<\/span><\/p>\n

Harrison’s version of\u00a0\u2018My Sweet Lord\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>has been certified platinum in both the US and the UK and 2x platinum in Japan. Other notable covers of the song were recorded by Nina Simone, Edwin Starr, and Johnny Mathis.<\/span><\/p>\n

Still on the New York Reggae chart,\u00a0\u2018Love Yu Self\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/b>\u00a0by Khristopher steps up from #9 to #6, while \u2018Bad Boy Johnny\u2019<\/i><\/b> by Tony Roy improves from #25 to #20. This week’s new entries\u00a0\u2018<\/i>Let My People Go\u2019 <\/span><\/em><\/b>by Buju Banton (#27) and\u00a0\u2018Cut Me Open\u2019<\/span><\/b><\/em>\u00a0by 1Mr Smooth and Yello Stone (#29).<\/span><\/p>\n

Over to the South Florida Reggae chart, the remake of\u00a0\u2018Don’t Know Much<\/span><\/em>\u2019 <\/b>by Hopeton Lindo and Novel-T spends a fourth week at #1. Meanwhile,\u00a0\u2018Call Him\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>by Kevin Downswell and Bounty Killer rises from #10 to #7, and\u00a0\u2018You Alone\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>by Kashief Lindo and Honorebel skips from #15 to #12. \u2018Look a Girl\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/b>\u00a0by Stephen and Chino McGregor debuts at #22.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the streaming and sales driven Billboard Reggae Albums chart, Bob Marley and the Wailers score 194 non-consecutive weeks in the #1 spot with\u00a0\u2018Legend\u2019<\/span><\/b><\/em>.<\/span><\/em> \u2018Best of Shaggy: The Boombastic Collection\u2019<\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/b>by Shaggy remains at #2, while\u00a0\u2018Dutty Classics Collection<\/span><\/em>\u2019<\/b> by Sean Paul is #3.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018No Love\u2019<\/span><\/b><\/em>\u00a0by Byron Messia is steady at #4,\u00a0\u2018Greatest Hits\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/b> by UB40<\/span><\/em>\u00a0is #5, and\u00a0\u2018Wisdom\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>by Stick Figure is at #6, with\u00a0\u2018Set in Stone\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/b>\u00a0at #7. \u2018Talibans\u2019<\/span><\/b><\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>continues to make inroads on other Billboard charts. On Rap Airplay, it rises from #13 to #11, while parachuting from #21 to #17 on Mainstream R&B\/Hip-Hop Airplay. On Rhythmic Airplay,\u00a0\u2018Talibans\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>inches up from #20 to #19. Anthony B’s collaboration\u00a0\u2018Wind Me Up\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>with American inspirational singer Dante Bowe rises to a new peak at #14.<\/span><\/p>\n
