In the video for <\/span>\u2018Gotham City\u2019<\/span><\/i><\/b>, one of the songs from his upcoming album, singer Brotha George gives a graphic look at the dangers of urban life — whether it is in New York City, Chicago or Kingston, Jamaica.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although known as a gospel singer, Brotha George changes gears on <\/span>\u2018Firm and Strong\u2019<\/span><\/i><\/b>, his first album which is scheduled for release in late July. <\/span>\u2018Gotham City\u2019<\/span><\/i><\/b> sums up the mood of the 13-song set with a direct appeal to wayward youth.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was growing up in Jamaica, it was (playing) football, cricket or run boat (backyard cooking). If you had differences, you would fist it out, but these youths nowadays are straight violence,\u201d said Brotha George.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Gotham City\u2019<\/span><\/i><\/b> is the second single from <\/span>\u2018Firm and Strong\u2019<\/span><\/i><\/b>. It follows \u2018God Alone\u2019 which was released in May.\u00a0 Brotha George\u2019s latest single features multi-instrumentalist Andre \u201cDretegs\u201d Hawthorne, an emerging musician from Jamaica, who is based in The Bronx. Veteran keyboardists Sidney Mills and Franklyn \u201cBubbler\u201d Waul, and bassist Leebert \u201cGibby\u201d Morrison also played on <\/span>\u2018Firm and Strong\u2019<\/span><\/i><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mills and Morrison have collaborated with Brotha George for many years. They played on <\/span>\u2018Unstoppable\u2019<\/span><\/i><\/b>, his previous album which came out in 2020.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Based in Connecticut, Brotha George saw his share of \u2018ghetto violence\u2019 during his youth in Jamaica. As a secular artist, he performed on sound systems in some of Kingston\u2019s grittiest areas including Maxfield Avenue and Majesty Gardens.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Firm And Strong\u2019<\/span><\/i><\/b> is one of the last projects on which veteran studio engineer Cegrica \u201cSoljie\u201d Hamilton worked on. He died in Kingston last December at age 69.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
