{"id":5573,"date":"2023-03-04T13:19:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-04T13:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandbox.reggaenorthca.com\/?p=5573"},"modified":"2023-03-04T13:19:00","modified_gmt":"2023-03-04T13:19:00","slug":"winston-blake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandbox.reggaenorthca.com\/?p=5573","title":{"rendered":"Winston Blake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Winston &#8220;Merritone&#8221; Blake<\/b>\u00a0OD\u00a0(19 November 1940 \u2013 27 February 2016) was a\u00a0Jamaican\u00a0sound system\u00a0operator,\u00a0record producer,\u00a0nightclub\u00a0owner, promoter, and occasional recording artist, working under the pseudonyms\u00a0<b>Blake Boy<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>Judge Winchester<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>He was born in\u00a0Morant Bay,\u00a0Saint Thomas, Jamaica, the youngest of four brothers, and attended\u00a0Kingston College.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Campbell_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Their mother died when Winston was young, and their father, Val Blake, began supplementing his income by selling radios and amplifiers, establishing his Mighty Merritone sound system in 1950. After Val Blake died in 1956, Winston and his brothers Trevor, Tyrone, and Monte began operating the sound system, and increasingly started competing with the larger sound systems from\u00a0Kingston.
