He was raised at\u00a0<a title=\"Maxfield Park Children's Home\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maxfield_Park_Children%27s_Home\">Maxfield Park Children&#8217;s Home<\/a>\u00a0and educated at\u00a0<a title=\"Alpha Boys School\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alpha_Boys_School\">Alpha Boys School,<\/a>\u00a0where he studied singing, drums, and dancing.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Linernotes_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Smart recorded his first single, &#8220;It Pains Me&#8221;, in 1969 for a producer called Mr. Caribbean.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0In 1970, he recorded &#8220;Ethiopia&#8221; for\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Joe Gibbs (record producer)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joe_Gibbs_(record_producer)\">Joe Gibbs<\/a>\u00a0and the first version of one of his most famous songs, &#8220;Pride &amp; Ambition&#8221;, with producer\u00a0<a title=\"Gussie Clarke\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gussie_Clarke\">Gussie Clarke<\/a>. His breakthrough would come in 1973 with &#8220;Mother Liza&#8221;, produced by Jimmy Radway, which topped the local singles chart, and led to &#8220;Pride &amp; Ambition&#8221; also becoming a big local hit.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Linernotes_2-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0After working with\u00a0<a title=\"Bunny Lee\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bunny_Lee\">Bunny Lee<\/a>\u00a0for several years, he recorded another of his best-known songs, &#8220;Ballistic Affair&#8221; at Channel One, in 1976, and began producing himself in 1977. Smart has continued recording and remains popular, with over 35 albums to his name. He is regarded as one of Jamaica&#8217;s most outrageous and colourful characters.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Larkin_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Smart appeared in the film\u00a0<i><a title=\"Rockers (1978 film)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rockers_(1978_film)\">Rockers<\/a><\/i>\u00a0along with contemporaries such as\u00a0<a title=\"Gregory Isaacs\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gregory_Isaacs\">Gregory Isaacs<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Jacob Miller (musician)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacob_Miller_(musician)\">Jacob Miller<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leroy_Smart\">Readme&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Smart was born in 1952 and orphaned at the age of two.
