In their book\u00a0<i>Reggae: The Rough Guide<\/i>\u00a0(1997), Steve Barrow and Peter Dalton described Smith as &#8220;the greatest vocalist to emerge in the rocksteady era&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Barrow_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Smith first came to prominence as a member of the Victors Youth Band, who were highly praised at the 1964 Jamaican Festival.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Larkin_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0He subsequently became a founding member and lead vocalist of\u00a0<a title=\"The Techniques\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Techniques\">The Techniques<\/a>, who recorded primarily with\u00a0<a title=\"Duke Reid\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duke_Reid\">Duke Reid<\/a>\u00a0for his Treasure Isle label. In 1964 they recorded several songs for\u00a0<a title=\"Byron Lee\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Byron_Lee\">Byron Lee<\/a>, two of which, &#8220;Don&#8217;t Do It&#8221; and &#8220;No One&#8221;, were included on the LP\u00a0<i>The Real Jamaica Ska<\/i>\u00a0released by Epic Records and co-produced by\u00a0<a title=\"Curtis Mayfield\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curtis_Mayfield\">Curtis Mayfield<\/a>.
