Their most famous track was &#8220;<a title=\"The Tide Is High\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Tide_Is_High\">The Tide Is High<\/a>&#8220;, written by band member\u00a0<a title=\"John Holt (singer)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Holt_(singer)\">John Holt<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-AMG_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The Paragons were originally Garth &#8220;Tyrone&#8221; Evans, songwriter\u00a0<a title=\"Bob Andy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bob_Andy\">Bob Andy<\/a>, Junior Menz, and Leroy Stamp. In 1964 Stamp was replaced by singer and songwriter John Holt, and Howard Barrett replaced Menz.<sup id=\"cite_ref-AMG_1-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The early Paragons sound used the vocal\u00a0harmonies\u00a0of\u00a0<a title=\"Jamaica\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jamaica\">Jamaican<\/a>\u00a0groups of the early 1960s. Beginning in 1964, they recorded on the Treasure Isle\u00a0record label\u00a0with\u00a0<a title=\"Record producer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Record_producer\">record producer<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Duke Reid\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duke_Reid\">Duke Reid<\/a>, songs such as &#8220;Memories by the Score&#8221;, &#8220;On the Beach&#8221;, &#8220;Only a Smile&#8221; and &#8220;Wear You to the Ball&#8221;, which were later covered by\u00a0UB40,\u00a0Horace Andy,\u00a0Dennis Brown,\u00a0Massive Attack, and others.
