Given public outcry that there will be no Festival Song Competition to mark Jamaica\u2019s 60th year of Independence, Minister of Entertainment and Culture Olivia \u201cBabsy\u201d Grange will seek Cabinet\u2019s intervention on the matter today.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Grange, there are only three songs with quality from 123 entries that could make the cut.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is for me at a policy level to have a discussion and to be guided, even by Cabinet [on] do we have a competition between the three songs, or do we just release the three songs? Do we select one of those songs as the theme song for Jamaica 60? These are things which will be announced in a matter of days,\u201d said Grange in a Jamaica Cultural Development Commission-organised virtual press conference on Saturday.<\/p>\n

It was attended by journalists, the panel of Festival Song judges, and Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) executives. The JCDC organises the Jamaica Festival Song Competition.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to say to the public [that] there are three songs that are selected. Normally, it is a competition between 10 songs. Do we want a competition between three songs, or do we want, as was recommended to me and we\u2019ve also initiated that, is to have a Jamaica 60 commemorative album on which those three songs will be part of that compilation?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

The panel of judges comprised singers Freddie McGregor and Alaine Laughton, and music producers Cleveland \u201cClevie\u201d Browne, Gussie Clarke, and Donovan Germain.<\/p>\n

In her sectoral debate presentation to Parliament last Wednesday, Grange announced that this year\u2019s Festival Song Competition was suspended due to the poor quality of entries. She said the judges were unable to identify 10 suitable songs despite an extension in the deadline.<\/p>\n

The minister also shed light on the proposed Jamaica 60 album.\u201cThose songs will be, more or less, commissioned songs or, more or less, request to individuals. I have approached a number of persons; I\u2019ve had responses from some of them. It will have a Koffee track, it will have a Shaggy track, it will have a Freddie McGregor track, it will have an OMI track, it will have a track from Inner Circle,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are a number of persons who have expressed an interest in making a contribution. There are a number of producers, who are speaking to a number of Jamaican artistes, who they would want to produce tracks with them. The process has started with or without a Jamaica Festival Song Competition; we will have a Jamaica 60 commemorative album… It will be ready shortly and I will make an announcement soon,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

This is the third time the Jamaica Festival Song Competition is being cancelled. It was first suspended in 2013 by then Minister of Youth and Culture Lisa Hanna, who wanted to reposition the contest as well as implement a voting system by which people could select their favourite Festival Song.\u00a0 At the time, Grange was the Opposition spokesperson for entertainment and labelled the cancellation as a \u201cbackward step and a disgrace\u201d.\u00a0 It was cancelled under Grange\u2019s tenure in 2017.<\/p>\n

Started in 1966, the Jamaica Festival Song Competition \u2014 once known as the Popular Song Contest \u2014 is the one of the highlights for the Independence celebrations.<\/p>\n

Past winners include The Maytals \u2018Bam Bam<\/em>\u2019<\/strong>; Eric Donaldson \u2018Cherry Oh Baby\u2019<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0\u2018Land of My Birth<\/em>\u2019<\/strong>; and Roy Rayon \u2018Give Thanks and Praises<\/em>\u2019<\/strong>.\u00a0 Last year\u2019s winner was Stacious\u2019\u00a0\u2018Jamaican Spirit\u2019<\/strong><\/em>. In 2020 Buju Banton won with\u00a0\u2018I Am a Jamaican\u2019<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n
