His nickname, &#8220;<b>Wild Apache<\/b>&#8220;, was given to him by his mentor\u00a0<a title=\"Early B\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Early_B\">Early B<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Huey_1-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Super Cat is considered one of the greatest deejays in the history of the Jamaican dancehall scene.<\/p>\n<p>Born to an\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Afro-Jamaican\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Afro-Jamaican\">Afro-Jamaican<\/a>\u00a0mother and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Indo-Jamaican\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indo-Jamaican\">Indo-Jamaican<\/a>\u00a0father,<sup id=\"cite_ref-Barrow_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Super Cat was raised in Kingston&#8217;s tough Seivright Gardens neighbourhood, then known as Cockburn Pen, home to ground-breaking\u00a0deejays\u00a0like\u00a0<a title=\"Prince Jazzbo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prince_Jazzbo\">Prince Jazzbo<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"U-Roy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/U-Roy\">U-Roy<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Huey_1-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0At the age of seven the Soul Imperial\u00a0sound system\u00a0allowed him to assist them at a local club called Bamboo Lawn. He auditioned for\u00a0Joe Gibbs\u00a0as a singer but was unsuccessful.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Lesser_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>He began appearing as a deejay under the name Cat-A-Rock, but soon switched to the name Super Cat.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Moskowitz_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0He also appeared as &#8216;Wild Apache&#8217;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Moskowitz_4-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0His first single &#8220;Mr. Walker&#8221;, produced by\u00a0<a title=\"Winston Riley\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Winston_Riley\">Winston Riley<\/a>, was released in 1981 and established his recording career. He went on to record for\u00a0<a title=\"Jah Thomas\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jah_Thomas\">Jah Thomas<\/a>\u00a0(&#8220;Walkathon&#8221;, on which he was billed as &#8216;Super Cat the Indian&#8217;),<sup id=\"cite_ref-Barrow_2-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0but his career was interrupted by a period of incarceration.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Moskowitz_4-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0After his release he began working with Early B on the\u00a0<a title=\"Killamanjaro\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Killamanjaro\">Killamanjaro<\/a> sound system in 1984,\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-Lesser_3-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>and his debut album,\u00a0<i>Si Boops Deh!<\/i>, was released in 1985, and included the hit singles &#8220;Boops&#8221; (which was based on\u00a0Steely &amp; Clevie&#8217;s updated &#8220;Feel Like Jumping&#8221; rhythm and sparked a craze for songs about\u00a0sugar daddies),<sup id=\"cite_ref-Barrow_2-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0and &#8220;Cry Fi De Youth&#8221;, establishing his style of\u00a0dancehall\u00a0with conscious lyrics.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Moskowitz_4-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Super_Cat\">Read more&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>William Anthony Maragh, also known as\u00a0Super Cat\u00a0(born in\u00a0Kingston, Jamaica, 25 June 1963) is a Jamaican\u00a0deejay\u00a0who achieved widespread popularity during the late 1980s and early 1990s\u00a0dancehall\u00a0movement.
