In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he was one of the most popular Jamaican musicians in the world. Throughout his prominence in his home country as a dancehall artist, he gained popularity in\u00a0North America\u00a0with his studio album,\u00a0<i><a title=\"Just Reality\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Just_Reality\">Just Reality<\/a><\/i>, in 1990. He released two studio albums,\u00a0<i><a title=\"As Raw as Ever\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/As_Raw_as_Ever\">As Raw as Ever<\/a><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>X-tra Naked<\/i>, which both won a\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Grammy Award\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grammy_Award\">Grammy Award<\/a>\u00a0as\u00a0<a title=\"Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grammy_Award_for_Best_Reggae_Album\">Best Reggae Album<\/a>\u00a0in 1992 and 1993, respectively. He is notoriously popular for &#8220;<a title=\"Mr. Loverman\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mr._Loverman\">Mr. Loverman<\/a>&#8221; and\u00a0<a title=\"X-tra Naked\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/X-tra_Naked\">&#8220;Ting-A-Ling&#8221;<\/a>, which were globally acclaimed and deemed his signature songs.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Shabba Ranks was born in Sturgetown,\u00a0St. Ann,\u00a0Jamaica, and raised in\u00a0Seaview Gardens,\u00a0Kingston.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Emperor_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-Seaview_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0He and his wife, Michelle, have two sons Rexton Jr and Jahwon.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Emperor_4-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0He currently resides in the\u00a0New York City\u00a0area.<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>His father, Ivan Gordon, was a\u00a0mason\u00a0who died in 1990.<sup id=\"cite_ref-NYT_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0His mother, Constance &#8220;Mama Christie&#8221; Christie, remained in Seaview after Shabba&#8217;s success, feeding the community with money sent from her son after his emigration.
