(January 2022)\">citation needed<\/span><\/a><\/i>]<\/sup>), better known by the stage name\u00a0<b>Yellowman<\/b>, is a Jamaican\u00a0reggae\u00a0and\u00a0dancehall\u00a0deejay, also known as King Yellowman. He was popular in Jamaica in the 1980s, rising to prominence with a series of singles that established his reputation.<\/p>\n<p>Winston Foster was abandoned by his parents and grew up in the Maxfield Children&#8217;s Home and the\u00a0Catholic orphanage\u00a0Alpha Boys School in Kingston, the latter known for its musical alumni.\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0He was shunned due to having\u00a0albinism, which was not typically socially accepted in Jamaica. <sup id=\"cite_ref-Campbell1808_1-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>In the late 1970s Yellowman first gained wide attention when he finished second to\u00a0<a title=\"Nadine Sutherland\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nadine_Sutherland\">Nadine Sutherland<\/a>\u00a0in the 1978 Tastee Talent Contest.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Campbell1808_1-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Like many Jamaican deejays, he honed his talents by frequently performing at outdoor sound-system dances, prominently with Aces International.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Campbell1808_1-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-autogenerated1_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0He had success as a recording artist, working with producer\u00a0<a title=\"Henry &quot;Junjo&quot; Lawes\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_%22Junjo%22_Lawes\">Henry &#8220;Junjo&#8221; Lawes<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Campbell1808_1-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0In 1981, after becoming popular throughout Jamaica, Yellowman became the first dancehall artist to be signed to a major American label (<a title=\"Columbia Records\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Columbia_Records\">Columbia Records<\/a>).<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yellowman\">Read more&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Winston Foster\u00a0OD (born 1956[citation needed]), better known by the stage name\u00a0Yellowman, is a Jamaican\u00a0reggae\u00a0and\u00a0dancehall\u00a0deejay, also known as King Yellowman.
