{"id":3097,"date":"2022-03-17T20:07:44","date_gmt":"2022-03-17T20:07:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandbox.reggaenorthca.com\/?p=3097"},"modified":"2022-03-18T14:00:34","modified_gmt":"2022-03-18T14:00:34","slug":"stranejah-cole","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandbox.reggaenorthca.com\/?p=3097","title":{"rendered":"Stranejah Cole"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Stranger Cole<\/b>, also known as\u00a0<b>StrangeJah Cole<\/b>\u00a0(born\u00a0<b>Wilburn Theodore Cole<\/b>, 26 July 1942)<sup id=\"cite_ref-Thompson_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>is a\u00a0Jamaican\u00a0singer whose long recording career dates from the early days of\u00a0ska\u00a0in 1962 through to the present (2019).<\/p>\n<p>Cole was born in\u00a0<a title=\"Kingston, Jamaica\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingston,_Jamaica\">Kingston, Jamaica<\/a> on 26 July 1942 and nicknamed &#8220;Stranger&#8221; by his family, as they considered that he didn&#8217;t resemble any member of his family.\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-Thompson_1-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Cole was initially successful as a songwriter, writing &#8220;In and out the Window&#8221;, which was a hit for Eric &#8220;Monty&#8221; Morris. <sup id=\"cite_ref-Boehm_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>This success gave him the chance to make his recording debut in 1962, instantly finding success with singles such as &#8220;Rough and Tough&#8221; and &#8220;When You Call My Name&#8221; (a duet with\u00a0Patsy Todd) for producer\u00a0Arthur &#8220;Duke&#8221; Reid. <sup id=\"cite_ref-Larkin_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Further success followed with singles for Reid through to the mid-1960s, and he also worked with other producers at this time, including\u00a0Clement &#8220;Coxsone&#8221; Dodd\u00a0(a duet with\u00a0Ken Boothe\u00a0on &#8220;Worlds Fair&#8221;), and\u00a0<a title=\"Prince Buster\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prince_Buster\">Prince Buster<\/a>. <sup id=\"cite_ref-Larkin_3-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Further duets included recordings with\u00a0<a title=\"Gladstone Anderson\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gladstone_Anderson\">Gladstone Anderson<\/a> (on &#8220;Just Like a River&#8221;)\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-Leggett_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>and\u00a0Hortense Ellis, the tendency to record duets apparently due to his shyness when it came to singing alone.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Thompson_1-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stranger_Cole#cite_note-Thompson-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In the late 1960s and early 1970s he recorded with several producers, including\u00a0Bunny Lee,\u00a0Lee &#8220;Scratch&#8221; Perry, and\u00a0<a title=\"Sonia Pottinger\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sonia_Pottinger\">Sonia Pottinger<\/a>. <sup id=\"cite_ref-Moskowitz_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>These included further material with Todd as &#8220;Stranger &amp; Patsy.&#8221; In 1971 he emigrated to England, where he toured extensively, and moved on again to Canada in 1973, settling in\u00a0Toronto. \u00a0He worked as a machinist in the Tonka Toy factory in Toronto and later opened a record store the first Caribbean shop in Toronto&#8217;s Kensington Market area His first album,\u00a0<i>&#8220;Forward&#8221; in the Land of Sunshine<\/i>, was released in 1976, with a handful of further albums released over the next ten years, mostly on his own label<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stranger_Cole\">Read more&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stranger Cole, also known as\u00a0StrangeJah Cole\u00a0(born\u00a0Wilburn Theodore Cole, 26 July 1942)is a\u00a0Jamaican\u00a0singer whose long recording career dates from the early days of\u00a0ska\u00a0in 1962 through to the present (2019).
