The group has undergone several line-up changes over the years, with Derrick &#8220;Duckie&#8221; Simpson as the mainstay. They had their most successful period in the 1980s, with their album\u00a0<i>Anthem<\/i>\u00a0winning the first ever\u00a0<a title=\"Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grammy_Award_for_Best_Reggae_Album\">Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a title=\"27th Annual Grammy Awards\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/27th_Annual_Grammy_Awards\">1985<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The group formed in the Waterhouse district of\u00a0Kingston in 1972, initially called Black Sounds Uhuru (the <a title=\"Swahili language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Swahili_language\">Swahili<\/a>\u00a0word for freedom), with a line-up of\u00a0<a title=\"Garth Dennis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Garth_Dennis\">Garth Dennis<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Don Carlos (musician)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Don_Carlos_(musician)\">Don Carlos<\/a>, and Derrick &#8220;Duckie&#8221; Simpson\u00a0Their first release was a\u00a0cover version\u00a0of\u00a0The Impressions&#8217; &#8220;Romancing to the Folk Song&#8221;, which was followed by &#8220;Time is on Our Side&#8221;; Neither song was a success and they split up, with Carlos pursuing a solo career, as did Dennis, before joining\u00a0<a title=\"The Wailing Souls\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Wailing_Souls\">The Wailing Souls<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Thompson38_2-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Simpson also briefly worked with the Wailing Souls, before forming a new version of Uhuru with Errol Nelson (of The Jayes) and\u00a0<a title=\"Michael Rose (singer)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_Rose_(singer)\">Michael Rose<\/a>, the group now taking the name Black Sounds Uhuru. <sup id=\"cite_ref-Thompson39_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Their\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Prince Jammy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prince_Jammy\">Prince Jammy<\/a>-produced debut album,\u00a0<i>Love Crisis<\/i>, was released in 1977.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Uhuru\">Read more&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Black Uhuru\u00a0is a Jamaican\u00a0reggae\u00a0group formed in 1972, initially as\u00a0Uhuru\u00a0(Swahili\u00a0for &#8216;freedom&#8217;).
