It is the first-ever exhibition of its kind, celebrating a wide range of Caribbean sounds in Toronto, the many artists who produced them, and the cultural soundtrack they created.<\/p>\n<p>The Rhythms and Resistance exhibit is being presented by the Downtown Yonge BIA and the Friars Museum, the legendary building that once housed the Hard Rock Cafe and famed nightclubs The Friars and The Nickelodeon, in partnership with the newly founded Toronto Music Museum, a not-for-profit organization formed by the Downtown Yonge BIA to preserve and exhibit Toronto\u2019s rich, diverse music history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaribbean music has been vital to Toronto\u2019s cultural development for a century,\u201d says Downtown Yonge Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director Mark Garner. \u201cThe exhibition\u2019s name reflects the history of Caribbean music in this city as one of resistance to injustice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the Rhythms and Resistance exhibition\u2019s many rare and wide-ranging artifacts are hundreds of photographs, posters, handbills, recordings, videos, instruments, costumes, clothing, and assorted ephemera related to calypso, reggae, soul, funk, and hip-hop musicians in Toronto, dating back to the first arrival of Caribbean immigrants in the 1940s, \u201950s, and \u201960s.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the artists featured in this exhibition include Bob Marley, Lillian Allen, Jackie Mittoo, Louise Bennett, the Mighty Sparrow, JoJo Bennett, Leroy Sibbles, Michie Mee, and many more.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Highlights include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The illuminated sign for the Record Nook, the music store at 1400 Bathurst Street run by reggae legends Jackie Mittoo and Lord Tanamo<\/li>\n<li>The original hand-painted sign advertising the first Caribana, which began in 1967 and grew to become one of the largest annual Caribbean carnivals in the world.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBob Marley in Toronto.\u201d Along with rare photographs of the international superstar performing and playing soccer in a Toronto Park, the exhibition features an authentic Bob Marley autograph and a vintage \u201cNatty Dread\u201d t-shirt, similar to the one he wore onstage at Massey Hall.<\/li>\n<li>A display featuring Michie Mee, Maestro, and Dream Warriors with their Caribbean-influenced sound. These artists were the hip hop pioneers who first put Toronto on the map and paved the way for global superstars like Drake, The Weeknd, and many more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Rhythms and Resistance is curated by music historians Klive Walker and Nicholas Jennings, who have created a unique experience showcasing music and culture. \u201cThe artists recording and performing this music are primarily a combination of Caribbean people who became Canadians through immigration,\u201d Walker notes, \u201cand others with Caribbean heritage who either grew up here in Toronto or were born here.\u201d \u201cBy the 1980s, the city was the second-biggest source of reggae on the planet, second only to Kingston, Jamaica,\u201d Jennings adds. \u201cThis collection of artifacts is an invitation to immerse yourself into the memories of diverse rhythms, melodies, and lyrics \u2013 all underpinned by a burning demand for equality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone should take some timeout during Black History Month to learn about and celebrate Toronto\u2019s powerful Caribbean music legacy. Admission is free to view the Rhythms and Resistance exhibition at the Friar\u2019s Museum, located on the second floor of Shoppers Drug Mart south of Yonge-Dundas Square.
