While his career began in the 1970s, he reached his greatest success in the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>Born the ninth of ten children, Hammond grew up listening to his father&#8217;s collection of American <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Soul (music)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soul_(music)\">soul<\/a> and <a title=\"Jazz\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jazz\">jazz<\/a> music including <a title=\"Sam Cooke\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sam_Cooke\">Sam Cooke<\/a> and <a title=\"Otis Redding\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Otis_Redding\">Otis Redding<\/a>.
