He sang in church from an early age, and started performing as a youth, forming a singing group called the Regals. <sup id=\"cite_ref-AMG_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>By the mid-1960s, he began recording and had one of the earliest\u00a0<a title=\"Rocksteady\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rocksteady\">rocksteady<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Hit record\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hit_record\">hits<\/a>\u00a0with &#8220;Take It Easy&#8221; in late 1966.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Larkin_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-Barrow_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0The track was recorded with\u00a0<a title=\"Lynn Taitt\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lynn_Taitt\">Lynn Taitt<\/a>\u00a0and the Jets, and is regarded as one of the first rocksteady singles.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Unsung_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0He had several more Jamaican hits in the late 1960s and early 1970s, including the first &#8216;herb&#8217; song ever recorded there, &#8220;Cool Collie&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Barrow_3-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0He worked for\u00a0<a title=\"Duke Reid\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duke_Reid\">Duke Reid<\/a>\u00a0as an\u00a0<a title=\"Arrangement\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arrangement\">arranger<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Backing vocalist\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Backing_vocalist\">backing vocalist<\/a>, and won the\u00a0<a title=\"Jamaica Independence Festival\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jamaica_Independence_Festival#Popular_Song_Competition\">Festival Song Contest<\/a>\u00a0in 1970 with &#8220;Boom Shaka Lacka&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Larkin_2-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-Barrow_3-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0He began working as a singer with\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Byron Lee &amp; the Dragonaires\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Byron_Lee_%26_the_Dragonaires\">Byron Lee &amp; the Dragonaires<\/a>, and in 1971 had a hit with &#8220;Grooving Out On Life&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Unsung_4-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hopeton_Lewis\">Read more&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lewis was born in\u00a0Kingston,\u00a0Jamaica.
