{"id":2409,"date":"2021-11-11T21:39:03","date_gmt":"2021-11-11T21:39:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandbox.reggaenorthca.com\/?p=2409"},"modified":"2021-11-11T21:39:03","modified_gmt":"2021-11-11T21:39:03","slug":"the-clarendonians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandbox.reggaenorthca.com\/?p=2409","title":{"rendered":"The Clarendonians"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Clarendonians were originally\u00a0<a title=\"Ernest Wilson (singer)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ernest_Wilson_(singer)\">Fitzroy &#8220;Ernest&#8221; Wilson<\/a>\u00a0and Peter Austin (who would also record as part of The Soul Lads), both from Hayes in\u00a0<a title=\"Clarendon Parish, Jamaica\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clarendon_Parish,_Jamaica\">Clarendon Parish<\/a>, the duo coming together in 1963; at that time Peter was 17 years old, Ernest was 11.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Larkin_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-Campbell1307_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0The duo won several talent contests and recorded their debut single, &#8220;A Day Will Come&#8221;, at Federal Records with producer\u00a0<a title=\"Leslie Kong\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leslie_Kong\">Leslie Kong<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Campbell1307_2-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Leaving producer Leslie Kong, they moved on to Duke Reid&#8217;s Treasure Isle studio. They came to the attention of\u00a0<a title=\"Studio One (record label)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Studio_One_(record_label)\">Studio One<\/a>\u00a0boss and producer\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Clement Dodd\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clement_Dodd\">Clement Dodd<\/a>, while they were still in their early teens. Dodd took the duo into the studio, and recorded a series of singles (including &#8220;Rudie Gone a Jail&#8221;, &#8220;Sho Be Do Be&#8221;, &#8220;Rudie Bam Bam&#8221;, &#8220;You Can&#8217;t Be Happy&#8221;, and &#8220;Darling Forever&#8221; \u2013 all chart-toppers in Jamaica,<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0and &#8220;You Can&#8217;t Keep a Good Man Down&#8221;) that helped to define the &#8220;rude boy&#8221; era of ska, alongside the other (initially less successful) young vocal group that Dodd was working with,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"The Wailers (1963-1974 band)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Wailers_(1963-1974_band)\">The Wailers<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Larkin_1-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-Harris_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Peter and Ernest brought the seven-year-old\u00a0<a title=\"Freddie McGregor\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Freddie_McGregor\">Freddie McGregor<\/a> (who had to stand on a crate to reach the microphone), to the attention of Mr. Dodd.
