When it was suggested, she cover it, singer KAEDI PHILO had no hesitation, given the track\u2019s timeless content.<\/p>\n<p>Her version, released in February, is produced by Richard \u201cBello\u201d Bell for Startrail Records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was Uncle Bello\u2019s idea to cover the song. I was familiar with the original, but he urged me to relisten to it some more. The song contains a powerful message about the perils of black women, something that still applies to our experience today though the song came out decades ago,\u201d said KAEDI PHILO.<\/p>\n<p>A recording artist since 2016, KAEDI PHILO was born in New York to Jamaican parents. She said putting her stamp on <strong><em>\u2018Black Woman\u2019<\/em><\/strong> was critical.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUltimately, I wanted to make sure that we paid our respect to the original. I sang and stacked the background vocals with Sherida Sharpe to give the arrangement a little more body, but those arrangements don\u2019t stray from the original,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>While a horn section led by saxophonist Dean Fraser does justice to the original arrangement, the Startrail Records production is enhanced by bluesy guitar riffs from Lamont \u201cMonty\u201d Savory.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u2018Black Woman\u2019<\/em><\/strong> is among the latest releases from Startrail Records, one of the leading labels in dancehall-reggae during the 1990s. Bell produced many hit songs then, including <strong><em>\u2018Lift up Your Head\u2019<\/em><\/strong> by Everton Blender, <strong><em>\u2018Fire pon Rome\u2019<\/em><\/strong> by Anthony B and <strong><em>\u2018Moma Africa\u2019<\/em><\/strong> by Garnet Silk.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u2018Behold I Come\u2019<\/em><\/strong> by Kumar Fyah, another song on the \u2018<strong><em>Black Woman\u2019<\/em><\/strong> beat, was also released in February.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Released in 1980, Judy Mowatt\u2019s \u2018Black Woman\u2019 is one of reggae\u2019s most emotive songs.
