For artists like Carl Meeks who grew up listening to classic reggae songs, their beats never left their minds. So, when French music producer Cedrik \u201cKiko\u201d Ynesta suggested he record an album of songs on timeless \u2018riddims\u2019, he readily agreed.<\/p>\n
\u2018Classeeks\u2019<\/em><\/strong> is the title of that album, scheduled for release on December 12. It has 13 songs including \u2018What\u2019s Going On\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, a collaboration with deejay Screechy Dan.<\/p>\n \u201cThese riddims are so special because that\u2019s where (dancehall music) started, so it give me that vibe,\u201d said Meeks.<\/p>\n Those beats include the \u2018Throw Mi Corn\u2019<\/em><\/strong> (from the song of the same by Larry Marshall), the \u2018Movie Star\u2019<\/em><\/strong> (from Errol Dunkley\u2019s hit song) and \u2018Mr. Bassie\u2019 <\/em><\/strong>(based on Horace Andy\u2019s hit single).<\/p>\n Several of the songs on \u2018Classeeks\u2019<\/em><\/strong> were previously released. They include\u00a0\u2018No Regrets\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, \u2018Ram Dance Master (featuring Johnny P), and \u2018Walking Dead\u2019<\/em><\/strong> (with Derrick Parker).<\/p>\n Meeks, best known for the songs, \u2018Weh Dem Fah\u2019<\/em><\/strong> and \u2018Youthman\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, enjoyed working on the project. Recording on the old school beats reminded him of his early days in the music business, when the Kingston-artist did the sound system rounds.<\/p>\n The veteran singer shared Ynesta\u2019s belief that \u2018Classeeks\u2019<\/em><\/strong> concept would have broad appeal.<\/p>\n \u201cHe wanted to capture the younger audience and let the older ones indulge in the new songs on these riddims.
