Toronto\u2019s longest-running Bob Marley Tribute, now in its 19th year, once again proved that Marley\u2019s music continues to unite and inspire. Hosted by NuFunk Concerts and Dubwise Canada, the night was a spectacular fusion of music, love, and positive vibrations\u2014an unforgettable homage to the reggae legend.<\/p>\n<p>Before the stage show even began, attendees were immersed in the Marley experience. Jay NuFunk &amp; Pressure Drop Selectors set the mood with a vinyl set featuring classic Wailers 45s, creating an atmosphere thick with anticipation. The night officially kicked off with a stirring spoken-word performance by Bobo Julius, whose powerful words about Jamaica\u2019s identity and its deep connection to Marley\u2019s legacy resonated with the crowd, drawing cheers of appreciation.<\/p>\n<p>One of the night\u2019s most magical moments came unexpectedly. An acoustic rendition of <strong><em>\u201cRedemption Song\u201d<\/em><\/strong> was set to open the show, but a last-minute microphone issue left Reggaddiction\u2019s lead singer stuck backstage. Vocalist David Matthews (DM) and guitarist Jay Cleary were joined by percussionist Kevin Howe, bassist Neil \u201cNemo\u201d Morris, Sing-Jay Sunray Grennan, keyboardists Sam Weller and Todd Britton, saxophonist Graeme Hambleton, trombonist RJ, and drummer Oz, assembling a powerhouse lineup.<\/p>\n<p>The show launched into high gear with SunRay leading <strong><em>\u201cLively Up Yourself,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> setting an infectious groove that had the audience moving. Tash Lorayne and Toya Monique then joined DM for a spirited rendition of <strong><em>\u201cWho the Cap Fit,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> with their harmonies paying homage to Marley\u2019s iconic backing vocalists, the I-Threes. Their performance of Bunny Wailer\u2019s <strong><em>\u201cDreamland\u201d<\/em><\/strong> was so captivating it earned the night\u2019s first REWIND! \u2014a testament to their seamless blend of precision and soul.<\/p>\n<p>Toya Monique\u2019s rendition of <strong><em>\u201cIron Lion Zion\u201d<\/em><\/strong> was a showstopper. Her dynamic stage presence and powerful vocals breathed new life into the classic, while Tash Lorayne\u2019s beautifully nuanced take on <strong><em>\u201cIs This Love\u201d<\/em><\/strong> created an intimate, heartfelt moment. Meanwhile, David Matthews delivered Marley\u2019s biggest anthems\u2014 <strong><em>\u201cNatural Mystic,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>\u201cOne Love,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>\u201cThree Little Birds,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>\u201cNo Woman No Cry\u201d<\/em><\/strong>\u2014with passion and precision. He also infused a dancehall energy into <strong><em>\u201cSoul Rebel\u201d<\/em><\/strong> and masterfully blended John Legend\u2019s <strong><em>\u201cOrdinary People\u201d<\/em><\/strong> and Junior Kelly\u2019s <strong><em>\u201cIf Love\u2019s So Nice\u201d<\/em><\/strong> into <strong><em>\u201cWaiting in Vain.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Juno Award winner Kairo McLean closed the first set with a fiery rendition of <strong><em>\u201cExodus,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> seamlessly weaving in elements of <strong><em>\u201cTwo Silhouettes on the Shade\u201d<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>\u201cCareless Whisper\u201d<\/em><\/strong> into <strong><em>\u201cOne Drop.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> During the break, Pressure Drop Selectors kept the vibe alive with deep cuts, even overcoming a technical issue that left them DJing on a single turntable\u2014an homage to reggae\u2019s sound system roots.<\/p>\n<p>The second set opened with reggae veteran Papa Levy and CIUT Radio host Patrick Roots paying tribute to Dennis Brown before bringing Reggaddiction back on stage. A surprise highlight of the night was the unexpected collaboration between reggae legend Friendlyness and reigning Juno winner Kirk Diamond. Stephen Beltzner and Rosemary Bowen spoke on behalf of the organization, thanking attendees for their generosity, which will help over 13,000 homes across the GTA.
